BETHANY
Bethany is a small village located on the eastern slopes of the Mount of Olives, about 3.2 km (2 miles) from Jerusalem. This village holds great significance in the New Testament due to several pivotal events in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

1. The Home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus
Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were beloved siblings and close companions of Jesus, and they resided in Bethany. Jesus performed one of his most profound miracles here: bringing Lazarus back to life. Lazarus had been dead for four days when Jesus arrived at the tomb and miraculously resurrected him, displaying his power over life and death (Jn 11:1-44). This miracle served as proof of Jesus’ divinity and gave a glimpse into His future resurrection.
2. The Anointing at Bethany
While Jesus was dining at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany, a woman came with an alabaster jar of expensive perfumed oil and anointed Jesus. This act of devotion and worship was significant as it prepared Jesus for His impending burial (Mt 26:6-13; Mk 14:3-9). Jesus praised her act, stating that wherever the gospel is preached, her deed would be remembered.
3. The Triumphal Entry
Jesus’ journey to the Temple for His triumphant entry into Jerusalem began from “Bethphage and Bethany at the place called the Mount of Olives” (Lk 19:29). This event, commemorated as Palm Sunday, marks the fulfillment of prophecy and Jesus’ declaration as the Messiah.
4. Retreat after Cleansing the Temple
After cleansing the Temple of the money changers, Jesus left the city and spent the night in Bethany (Mt 21:17). This act demonstrated His authority over the Temple and His desire for it to be a house of prayer.

Bethany was also where Jesus bid farewell to His disciples before ascending to heaven. As described in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus lifted His hands and blessed His disciples, and then He was taken up into heaven (Lk 24:50-51). This moment signified the completion of His earthly ministry and the beginning of His reign at the right hand of the Father.
6. The Promise of the Second Coming
During the ascension, two men in white garments appeared to the apostles and assured them that Jesus would return in the same manner as they saw Him go into heaven (Acts 1:11). This promise fuels the Christian hope of Christ’s second coming, anticipated to occur at the same place where He ascended.
