DISUNITY IN THE CHURCH AND ITS RESOLUTION

OVERCOMING DISUNITY IN THE CHURCH

The Church, though founded on the rock of Christ Himself (Mt 16:18), has not been immune to internal disagreements throughout history. The early Church, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, serves as a powerful testament to both the challenges and the solutions for overcoming disunity. The Holy Spirit, who empowers the Church (Acts 2:1-4), also guides us towards Christian unity.

LESSONS FROM THE EARLY CHURCH:

Servant Leadership:
Jesus, our Lord and Master, washed the feet of His disciples (Jn 13:4-17), demonstrating that true greatness lies in humble service. This principle extends to all Church leadership, from pastors to fellow parishioners. By prioritizing the needs of others, we foster a spirit of unity and mutual respect.

Unity in Charity:
The early Church exemplifies the power of charity in creating a unified community (Acts 2:44-47). “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). Their shared faith and acts of charity, such as holding all things in common, bound them together. Catholic teaching emphasizes the importance of both faith and works (Jas 2:14-26). By actively practicing charity within our communities, we strengthen the bonds of Christian love.

Discernment and Dialogue:
Disagreements did arise in the early Church, as seen in the dispute over the distribution of food to widows (Acts 6:1-6). The Apostles, guided by the Holy Spirit, addressed the issue by creating the diaconate, a ministry dedicated to serving the community’s needs. This highlights the importance of open dialogue within the Church, guided by the teachings of Scripture and Tradition, discerned by the Magisterium. Through prayerful discussion and a listening heart, we can reach solutions that strengthen the Church’s mission.

A CALL TO UNITY

Saint Paul’s plea to the Corinthians (1 Cor 1:10) resonates across the centuries: “be united in the same mind and the same purpose.” We are called to celebrate the rich diversity within the Church while striving for unity in core beliefs and practices. Focusing on our shared love for Christ, actively practicing charity, and engaging in open dialogue are all essential steps toward overcoming disunity.

By following the examples of the early Church and embracing the teachings of the Catholic Church, we can build a more unified and effective Church, a true beacon of hope for the world. Let us remember the words of our Holy Father, Pope Francis: “A Christian is never alone; he or she is always a member of the Body of Christ, the Church. … Let us pray for one another, so that we may all be united in the way the Lord desires” (Gaudete et Exsultate, 66).

REFLECTION

As members of the Body of Christ, we are entrusted with the mission of fostering unity within the Church. Let us embrace the humility of servant leadership, the generosity of charity, and the wisdom of discernment and dialogue. By doing so, we can overcome disunity and build a Church that truly reflects the love and unity of Christ. May the Holy Spirit guide us in this endeavor, and may we always strive to be one in mind and heart, as we journey together in faith.
