JESUS FED BY OTHERS
During His public ministry, Jesus and His apostles dedicated themselves fully to preaching the Word of God. As they traveled from town to town, they relied on the hospitality and generosity of others for their sustenance. The Gospel of Luke illustrates this vividly:
“Afterward he journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources” (Lk 8:1-3).
From His birth to His death, Jesus experienced the kindness and support of various individuals who opened their hearts and resources to Him. At His birth, shepherds provided shelter for the Infant Jesus. At His death, Nicodemus brought spices for His burial, and Joseph of Arimathea offered his tomb. Throughout His ministry, women like Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna provided food and resources for Jesus and His disciples.
REFLECTION
This reliance on the generosity of others underscores a vital aspect of Christian life: supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving God. Jesus emphasized this principle when He said: “Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward” (Mt 10:42).
As followers of Christ, we are called to support our shepherds and missionaries who continue the work of preaching the Gospel and serving the Church. Just as Jesus and His apostles were sustained by the generosity of others, we should offer our support to those who have devoted their lives to God’s service. Whether through providing hospitality, resources, or simple acts of kindness, our contributions significantly impact the mission of the Church.
Let us be mindful of the ways we can support our church leaders and missionaries, knowing that our generosity reflects our faith and love for Christ. By doing so, we help sustain their ministry and participate in spreading the Gospel, fulfilling Jesus’ call to care for one another. May we always remember that in giving, we receive, and in supporting our fellow disciples, we honor Christ Himself.
