JESUS, EVENTS BEFORE HIS BIRTH

JESUS, EVENTS BEFORE HIS BIRTH

The birth of Jesus was a meticulously planned event by God the Father, as detailed in the Gospels. Here are the key preparations:

1. Announcement to Zechariah: The angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah, announcing the miraculous birth of his son John, despite Zechariah and Elizabeth’s old age and Elizabeth’s barrenness. Gabriel revealed that John would prepare the way for the Messiah “in the spirit and power of Elijah” (Lk 1:17).

2. Announcement to Mary: Six months later, Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, announcing she would conceive Jesus, the “Son of the Most High,” through the Holy Spirit. Gabriel stated that Jesus would inherit the throne of David and rule forever, being called holy, the Son of God (Lk 1:33-35).

3. Revelation to Joseph: An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, explaining the virgin birth of Jesus and instructing Joseph to name the child Jesus, who would save his people from their sins (Mt 1:18-21).

4. Mary Visits Elizabeth: When Mary visited her relative Elizabeth, the unborn John leaped in Elizabeth’s womb, filled with the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:41).

5. Mary’s Canticle (Magnificat): During her visit, Mary praised God in a song known as the Magnificat, expressing her gratitude for God’s blessings and the fulfillment of His promises to Israel (Lk 1:46-55).

6. Zechariah’s Prophecy: After John’s birth and circumcision, Zechariah regained his speech, and filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied about the missions of John and Jesus (Lk 1:67-79).

7. Decree of Caesar Augustus: Emperor Caesar Augustus issued a decree for a census of the entire Roman world, requiring Joseph and Mary to travel to Bethlehem, Joseph’s ancestral home. This census fulfilled the prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Lk 2:1-5).

REFLECTION

The events leading up to Jesus’ birth were not random but part of a divine plan, emphasizing God’s meticulous preparation and fulfillment of His promises. The involvement of individuals like Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and others highlights how God works through people to accomplish His purposes.

Just as God prepared the way for Jesus’ birth, He also prepares us for our unique missions. Our circumstances, families, and personal journeys are all part of His divine plan. Recognizing this, we should seek to understand and embrace the mission God has for us, trusting in His guidance and acting with faith. In doing so, we participate in the unfolding of His greater plan, fulfilling our roles in His story of salvation.
