JESUS’ CHARACTERISTICS REVEALED TO MARY

JESUS’ CHARACTERISTICS REVEALED TO MARY

The angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary about the birth of Jesus Christ is one of the most profound and pivotal moments in the New Testament. This annunciation not only reveals the divine nature and mission of Jesus but also provides deep insights into His character and the fulfillment of God’s promises. Gabriel’s words, recorded in the Gospel of Luke, say: “He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob forever and his reign shall have no end” (Lk 1:32-33).

1. He Will Be Great
Jesus’ greatness is unparalleled, transcending all historical and religious figures. He is greater than King David, His illustrious ancestor. In Matthew 22:41-45, Jesus Himself questions the Pharisees about the Messiah being David’s son and yet David’s Lord, highlighting His superiority. Furthermore, Jesus is wiser than Solomon, as stated in Matthew 12:42, where Jesus mentions that “the queen of the South… came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.” Additionally, Jesus is a greater preacher than Jonah, who brought the city of Nineveh to repentance (Mt 12:41). His teachings and parables have influenced countless lives, bringing transformative truth and divine wisdom.

2. He Will Be Called Son of the Most High
The title “Son of the Most High” signifies Jesus’ unique relationship with God the Father. Unlike any other human, Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, not by earthly means. This divine conception makes Him truly the “Son of God.” While Adam is also referred to as the son of God in Luke 3:38 due to his direct creation by God, Jesus is distinct as God incarnate. Adam was made in God’s image and likeness, but Jesus is God who took on human flesh (Jn 1:14). This unique sonship underscores His divine authority and mission on earth.

3. The Lord God Will Give Him the Kingdom of David, His Ancestor
Gabriel’s message to Mary also emphasizes the fulfillment of God’s covenant with David. In 2 Samuel 7:12-14, God promises David that his throne will be established forever. Jesus, as a descendant of David, inherits this eternal kingdom. Unlike the temporal and often turbulent reigns of David and his successors, Jesus’ kingship is eternal and unshakeable. He reigns not only over Israel but over the entire world, fulfilling the prophecy of an everlasting kingdom.

4. He Will Rule Over the People of Jacob Forever and His Reign Shall Have No End
The “people of Jacob” refers to the twelve tribes of Israel, but Jesus’ mission extends far beyond the boundaries of Israel. His salvation is offered to all humanity. The scattering of the Israelites and their mingling with the Gentiles foreshadow the universal scope of Jesus’ reign. As the Church, the body of believers, encompasses all who accept Jesus as their Savior, His kingdom is truly universal. Unlike the earthly kings Saul, David, and Solomon, whose reigns were limited to 40 years each, Jesus’ reign is eternal, bringing everlasting peace and justice.

5. He Will Be Holy
In Luke 1:35, Gabriel tells Mary, “The holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” Jesus’ holiness is intrinsic to His nature as God incarnate. He is sinless, both by birth and by action. This holiness sets Him apart from all humanity and qualifies Him to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins (Heb 4:15). His life, teachings, and sacrificial death exemplify the highest standard of moral and spiritual purity.

REFLECTION

As Christians, the characteristics of Jesus revealed to Mary serve as a foundation for our faith and hope. Jesus’ greatness, divine sonship, fulfillment of prophecy, eternal reign, and inherent holiness reassure us of His authority and love. These truths call us to worship Him wholeheartedly and follow His example in our daily lives.

Understanding Jesus’ divine mission and character should inspire us to share His message of salvation with the world, embracing the universal scope of His kingdom. As we await His return, let us remain steadfast in our faith, knowing that His reign is eternal, and His promises are sure.

May we live in the light of His holiness, striving to reflect His love and grace in all we do. Let us also seek to grow in wisdom and understanding, following the teachings of our great King, Jesus Christ.
