CHRISTMAS AND ANGELS’ SONGS
The birth of Jesus Christ is a pivotal event in Christian history, celebrated worldwide as Christmas. It marks the moment when God took on human form, bringing hope and salvation to humanity. One of the most beautiful and profound aspects of the Christmas story is the angelic proclamation and the heavenly choir that announced Jesus’ birth.
The Missing Local Custom
In ancient Judean culture, the birth of a male child was often celebrated with music and festivities. Local musicians would gather to greet the newborn with songs and joyous sounds, creating an atmosphere of warmth and joy for the family and community. However, Jesus’ birth, the Son of God, occurred under humble circumstances, away from such earthly celebrations. Born in a stable in Bethlehem, Jesus was laid in a manger because there was no room for Mary and Joseph in the inn (Lk 2:7).
God’s Heavenly Choir
Although Jesus’ birth lacked the typical earthly fanfare, God compensated in a miraculous and divine way. Instead of local musicians, a host of angels filled the night sky with a heavenly announcement. This extraordinary event is recorded in the Gospel of Luke: “And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Lk 2:13-14).
The Shepherds as Witnesses
The shepherds, considered lowly and humble in society, were chosen by God to be the first witnesses of this divine revelation. Their presence at the scene underscores the message that Jesus came for all people, regardless of status or position. The shepherds’ reaction was immediate; they went with haste to Bethlehem to see the newborn Savior, and after seeing Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child (Lk 2:16-17).
REFLECTION
As we reflect on the Christmas story and the angelic proclamation, several profound lessons emerge for us as Christians:
1. Humility and Simplicity: Jesus, the King of Kings, was born in the humblest of circumstances. This reminds us of God values humility and simplicity. We are called to live modestly and serve others with a humble heart.
2. God’s Sovereignty and Provision: The lack of earthly celebration at Jesus’ birth was more than compensated by a heavenly choir. This teaches us that God’s provision and plans are always perfect, even if they do not align with our human expectations.
3. Good News for All: The angels proclaimed “good tidings of great joy” for all people. The message of Jesus is universal and inclusive, breaking down barriers and bringing hope and salvation to everyone.
4. Witnessing and Evangelism: The shepherds, after witnessing the Christ child, became the first evangelists, sharing the good news with others. We too are called to share the message of Jesus’ love and salvation with those around us.
5. Divine Peace: The angels sang of “peace on earth.” In a world often filled with turmoil and strife, the peace that comes from knowing Jesus is profound and transformative. As Christians, we are to be ambassadors of this peace.
As we celebrate Christmas, let us remember the heavenly announcement and the significance of Jesus’ birth. Let us embrace humility, trust in God’s plans, share the good news, and be instruments of His peace. May the joy of the angels’ songs fill our hearts and homes, reminding us of the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
