SIGNS OF DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM AND THE END TIMES

In the Gospel of Matthew, we find a profound discourse by Jesus on the Mount of Olives, addressing his disciples’ questions about the destruction of Jerusalem, his second coming, and the end of the age. This teaching, known as the Olivet Discourse, provides crucial insights into the signs that will precede these momentous events.

Jesus begins by warning his followers about the emergence of false messiahs and prophets who will attempt to deceive many. He emphasizes the importance of discernment in these times, urging Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and not be led astray by false teachings.

The Lord then speaks of widespread conflicts, describing wars between nations and kingdoms. These geopolitical upheavals, however, are not to be seen as immediate harbingers of the end but rather as part of the ongoing tribulations that will characterize the period leading up to it.

A significant sign Jesus mentions is the persecution of his disciples. He foretells a time when followers of Christ will face hatred, betrayal, and even death for their faith. This persecution, while daunting, serves as a testament to the enduring power of the Gospel in the face of opposition.

Jesus also points to a moral and spiritual decline, speaking of an increase in evildoing and a corresponding decrease in love among people. This spiritual cooling serves as a reminder for Christians to remain vigilant in their faith and to actively cultivate love and compassion in their communities.

Amidst these challenging signs, Jesus provides a message of hope. He declares that the Gospel will be preached to all nations before the end comes. This emphasizes the universal nature of God’s salvation and the crucial role of evangelization in God’s plan.

Regarding the destruction of Jerusalem, Jesus gives specific instructions for those in Judea to flee to the mountains when they see the “desolating abomination” in the holy place. Catholic scholars interpret this as referring to the Roman siege and destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, which occurred within the generation Jesus addressed.

The discourse culminates with Jesus describing the signs of his second coming. He speaks of cosmic disturbances – the darkening of the sun and moon, stars falling, and the shaking of heavenly powers. These cataclysmic events will herald the glorious return of Christ, who will send his angels to gather the elect from all corners of the earth.

It’s important to note that Catholic teaching distinguishes between the events surrounding Jerusalem’s destruction in 70 AD and the final coming of Christ at the end of time. The Church understands that we have been living in the “end times” since Christ’s first coming, with his return being the ultimate fulfillment of God’s plan.

REFLECTION

For us as Christians today, this teaching carries a powerful message. We are called to remain vigilant, steadfast in faith, and active in spreading the Gospel. While we may witness signs reminiscent of those Jesus described, we should not fall into the trap of trying to predict the exact timing of Christ’s return. Instead, we are encouraged to live each day in preparation, growing in love, faith, and good works.

As we navigate the challenges of our time, let us remember Christ’s words of assurance: “But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved” (Mt 24:13). May we find strength in this promise, living as faithful witnesses to Christ’s love and eagerly awaiting his glorious return.

This teaching calls us to a life of vigilance, faith, and evangelization. In a world filled with distractions and false teachings, we must anchor ourselves in Christ’s truth and remain steadfast in our faith. By actively sharing the Gospel and embodying Christ’s love, we fulfill our mission and prepare ourselves and others for his return. Let us draw strength from Jesus’ promise of salvation and continue to persevere in faith, spreading his message of hope and love to all nations.
