Jesus, Accusations Against

His enemies falsely accused him as “a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Mt 11:19). They accused him of violating the Sabbath law by healing on that day, making himself equal to God (Jn 5:18) and claiming to be the king of the Jews (Mt 27:11-12; Jn 18:33).

The Jewish leaders told Pilate, “We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king” (Lk 23:2).
