Narrow Gate, Strive to Enter

STRIVE TO ENTER THROUGH THE NARROW GATE

Someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” He answered them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough” (Lk 13:23-24).

“Strive” is the key word here. The entry into the Kingdom of God is difficult. This entry requires maximum effort. It is comparable to an athlete who does all kinds of strenuous preparations to win the contest. Paul clarifies this: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever” (1 Cor 9:25). Again, he says: “Fight the good fight for the true faith” (1 Tim 6:12a).

REFLECTION

We shall not postpone conversion and reconciliation. Constant dedication and commitment should follow. We see such a lifestyle in the lives of saints, especially Paul the Apostle and St. Augustine.
