SETH, THE SON OF ADAM
Seth is a significant figure in the Bible, introduced as the third son of Adam and Eve. His birth and life represent continuity and hope for humanity after the tragic events involving his older brothers, Cain and Abel.
After the murder of Abel by Cain, Eve “gave birth to a son whom she called Seth. ‘God has granted me another offspring in place of Abel,’ she said, ‘because Cain killed him’” (Gen 5:25). Seth’s name means “appointed” or “granted,” reflecting Eve’s belief that God had provided another offspring to carry on the righteous lineage after Abel’s death.
Like Adam who was born in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1:26-27), “he begot a son in his likeness, after his image; and he named him Seth” (Gen 5:3). Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born. When Seth was one hundred and five years old, he begot Enosh (Gen 5:7). “The whole lifetime of Seth was nine hundred and twelve years; then he died” (Gen 5:8).
