FALSE PROPHETS IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING
Beware of False Prophets
Jesus said: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but underneath are ravenous wolves” (Mt 7:15). This warning from Jesus should not be taken literally. The imagery of sheep and wolves is symbolic. Sheep represent innocence and defenselessness, while wolves symbolize predatory and dangerous intentions. False prophets disguise themselves with the appearance of righteousness and piety, but their true nature is harmful and deceitful.
Identifying False Prophets
In the time of Jesus, it was often challenging to distinguish false prophets from true ones because they used similar attire and language. However, their true nature could be discerned through their actions and the fruits of their ministry. Jesus emphasized that “by their fruits you will know them” (Mt 7:16). The Catholic Church teaches the importance of discernment in identifying false prophets. According to Catholic doctrine, discernment involves prayer, reflection, and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit. 4. Evaluate the Fruits: Assess the actions and outcomes of those who claim to be prophets. True prophets will bear good fruit that aligns with the teachings of Christ.
